Top 10 Romantic Getaways in Queensland
We all know Queensland is a great holiday location for everyone from families with young kids, adventure seekers, history buffs, nature lovers and those that just want to sit back in paradise. But if you know where to look you’ll find plenty of romantic little hideaways.
Honeymooners have been flocking to the tropical islands on the Great Barrier Reef for years, some even getting married there for the sake of some spectacular wedding photos.
Romance doesn’t have to be isolated to the islands though. We’ve put together a list of what we believe are the most romantic spots in Queensland. Places where you can enjoy a romantic escape, wedding, honeymoon, or even pop the question.
#1 Heart Reef, Whitsundays
First discovered in 1975, this reef has grown in the shape of a love heart and become a major attraction of the Whitsundays. To protect the reef no diving is allowed, but you can organise a scenic flight above the attraction which is the best way to see its unusual shape anyway. It has become known as one of the most romantic tourist attractions in the world and the site of many a wedding proposal.
We Recommend: Try a Scenic Flight over Heart Reef and many other breathtaking locations
#2 Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Cairns
The Skyrail is a spectacular suspended journey over the World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest of the Atherton Tablelands. Passengers travel in a cable car for the 7.5km journey up above the trees, affording phenomenal views of the mountains, streams and Cairns coastline. Once at the top you can wander the tableland villages hand in hand, dine in quaint little cafes, or hop back on for the return journey.
#3 Noosa Heads, Sunshine Coast
The waterways around Noosa are absolutely stunning, they’re so clear you can see fish swimming up to 8 feet below the surface on a good day. There are plenty of romantic things to do in this sleepy beach town including walks along pristine beaches, dining with an ocean view, and you can even take a Gondola ride as though you were in a tropical Venice.
We Recommend: After a day at the beach or cruising the Noosa River, enjoy a romantic meal or drink along Noosa's stylish Hastings Street precinct.
#4 Mt Tamborine, Gold Coast Hinterland
Up in the mountains and away from the glitz (and tourists) of Surfers Paradise, is a tranquil hinterland region full of wineries, lush greenery, quaint villages and romantic lodges and Hinterland accommodation options.
These secluded retreats are perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries and even surprise proposal getaways.
We Recommend: Stay at a Hinterland retreat, take a scenic drive, or take a winery tour.
#5 Hamilton Island, Whitsundays
I know we said there are more than just tropical islands in Queensland, but you can’t deny Hamilton Island as an incredible couple’s getaway location.
There’s an array of luxury resort facilities to help you relax such as couple massages or spa treatments, and activities such as diving the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, incredible restaurants and secluded lookouts that are perfect for stolen kisses.
We Recommend: Get the Whitsunday Islands Hopper Pass and catch a ferry from the mainland to Hamilton Island & others as many times as you like.
#6 Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland
Take a wonderfully scenic drive up into the Blackall Range, where spectacular views are in every direction.
There’s a beautiful selection of gourmet food, delightful restaurants and cafes, and plenty of retreat or cabin accommodation to choose from.
We Recommend: Go on the Sunshine Wine Trail and sample wines and liquers from local wineries and cellar doors.
#7 Queensland Outback Escapes
You may not think romance when you think of the outback, but imagine your own private cabin miles from anyone, beautiful scenery as far as the horizon all around, stunning sunsets and a night sky with more stars than you could ever see in the city.
You can enjoy a private, secluded escape in Australia's glorious Outback with nothing but each other.
We Recommend: Visit one of the many National Parks and enjoy a secluded hike, bush walk or scenic drive and enjoy the serenity.
#8 Sailing Tours Or Scenic Cruises
The Great Barrier Reef is home to a number of charter companies that can take you on a romantic sailing cruise for anything from a day to a couple of weeks. You can join a standard yacht tour with your own private cabin, hire a smaller boat for a personal charter, or even just take the boat out on your own. Of course the Barrier Reef isn't the only place you can sail the seas, travel south to the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay or Gold Coast and you'll have a wide variety of romantic cruise options to enjoy.
We Recommend:Take a sunset cruise along the Gold Coast Broadwater and just sit back, relax and listen to the sound of the waves as you gently sail through the seaway.
#9 Palm Cove, Tropical North Queensland
Located in between the Daintree Rainforest and the Coral Sea is the beautiful Palm Cove.
This little corner of Tropical North Queensland is known for its pristine white sandy beaches lined with palm trees, with many secluded locations, first class resorts and gorgeous scenery to simply enjoy the moment together.
We Recommend: Relax on the beach or by the hotel pool with a cocktail. View Palm Cove accommodation options.
#10 Daintree Eco Spa & Lodge
Keeping things rather secluded, Daintree Eco Lodge only has 15 rainforest “Bayans” (houses) nestled in the beautiful lush greenery of the Daintree rainforest. You can spend your days exploring the rainforest, swimming in the undercover pool or mountain streams, dining at the delectable restaurant, or being pampered at the Daintree Wellness Spa.
We Recommend: A weekend getaway that includes massage and relaxation at the Spa before a candle lit dinner overlooking a tranquil rainforest lagoon.
