Townsville lies on the Queensland coast and is located about 17.5 hours drive north of Brisbane and almost 5 hours drive south of Cairns.
North of Townsville are the coastal towns of Mission Beach, Tully, Cardwell, Ingham and Balgal Beach. To the south are Ayr, Home Hill and Bowen.
Inland localities include Charters Towers and Ravenswood. Islands nearby on the Great Barrier Reef include Dunk Island, Bedarra Island, Hinchinbrook Island, Orpheus Island, Palm Island and Magnetic Island.
