Birdsville Royal Hotel Ruins
This piece of history was built in 1883 with dehydrated gypsum mixed with sand and water as cement for the stonework. This Australian style of masonry spread through central Australia as a way of controlling extreme temperatures and made up for the lack of timber. The hotel operated as such until it was used as a hospital from 1923 to 37, then as a private residence. Today you can visit the Royal Hotel Ruins out near Birdsville and see the building that is now listed with the National Trust.
